Microsoft Delays Windows 12, Focuses on Windows 11 25H2 Update
Microsoft has cancelled plans for a standalone Windows 12 release and will instead deliver its next major feature update as Windows 11 version 25H2 later this year.
Microsoft recently announced that it will not release Windows 12 as a standalone operating system. Instead, the next major feature update will be delivered as Windows 11 version 25H2 in the second half of 2025. This release will build on the same platform and servicing stack as the current 24H2 update, and Microsoft plans to deliver it via a small enablement package. Installing the 25H2 update should feel no different from applying a monthly cumulative patch.
Although it isn’t a new OS, Windows 11 version 25H2 will include features that are already staged in the 24H2 branch. Microsoft will activate these capabilities through regular monthly updates as each feature reaches maturity. Enterprises and educational institutions will benefit from a renewed 36‑month support cycle, while consumer editions will gain 24 months of servicing.
One reason Microsoft is taking this approach is that support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025. Delivering 25H2 in the September‑October window should encourage remaining Windows 10 users to upgrade, since they’ll be able to move to a modern platform without the disruption of a full OS reinstallation.
The 25H2 Insider Preview is available now, and testers can begin exploring the new features and sending feedback. General availability is expected later this year.
